Coventry Transport Museum

Coventry Transport Museum is free to visit and has the largest publicly owned collection of British vehicles in the world. It tells the fascinating story of Coventry and its people through the rise and fall of its biggest industry.

The museum had a huge £9.5 million makeover in 2015, and we worked with lots of local community groups to make it a fun, friendly and exciting place to visit. One of the key ideas from our work together was to add Makaton signing and symbols to the museum, especially as we have a lot of families visiting. The Heritage Lottery Fund kindly provided support for the 'Makaton project'.

We worked with The Makaton Charity to find the best symbols for each exhibition space, and learned more about how to add symbols to the museum facilities too. Our local Makaton tutors at the NHS Speech and Language department trained our museum assistants, shop assistants, learning and engagement team in basic Makaton signing.

As a transport museum, we also learned more unusual signs like racing car, caravan and bicycle!

Makaton signs are not just used in everyday communication at Coventry Transport Museum. We have also had great fun sharing Makaton signs with followers on our social media sites, especially the 2015 Christmas Advent Calendar. Our front of house team have really enjoyed practising their signs every day in their staff meetings too!

Coventry Transport Museum are very proud of our Makaton Friendly certificate, especially as we are currently one of just three museums in the UK to have one.

It has been fantastic to see the positive reaction from visitors and the local community, especially to some of our children’s activities which use Makaton. We now have Makaton symbols in our facilities, exhibitions, learning and engagement activities.

Coventry Transport Museum is free to visit and open every day of the year except 24th – 26th December and 1st January. Access information is available on our website.

Coventry Transport Museum is a Makaton Friendly organisation. Get in touch with Sarah Drew (01267 606760 / to find out how you can become Makaton Friendly.
